About me - Jay Atara
Where leadership, purpose, people and planet meet, that is where my work sits.
Every leader, before anything else, is a human being. Behind the title is someone carrying more than the role ever shows: the decision that kept them awake, the fear of being found wanting, the quiet question of whether any of it is right. That is the person I sit with. I observe before I speak. I listen to what is said and to what is left unsaid. I trust intuition to reach what words have not yet found. Then I hold a mirror. Quietly. Honestly. Without judgement.
At the heart of this work is awareness. Turned inward, so fear is seen and not obeyed. Towards the room, so you are truly present in it. Towards others, so you hear what was never said. Towards the whole, so no part is served at the cost of the rest.
From that awareness, leaders find what they already hold. A conviction about what is true, and the constancy to keep going before the results arrive. An inner strength and an inner voice, built in the quiet hours long before the hard meeting. The courage to act while the fear is still in the room, and the patience to let good work take its time. The openness to keep learning. And the humility, trust and service that turn all of that strength towards others.
Three decades across finance, strategy, treasury, sustainability and transformation taught one lesson: culture and conscience matter as much as capital. As CFO and Board Director, through the financial crash, COVID-19 and over £1 billion in financing, it held every time. Hold outcomes lightly. Honour the work fully. People give their best when they feel seen, supported and trusted, and every success belonged to the team.
A breakdown in late 2022 made all of this undeniable. It led to Coherent Leaders, a book written to be a mirror rather than a manual.
Today this continues through advisory, board work and entrepreneurship. Through ElimuMatokeo in Tanzania, we are widening every child's access to education and financial literacy. Through Reforest Africa, we are helping restore humanity's relationship with nature. Both rest on one belief: profit and purpose are partners, and done well, each strengthens the other.
Coherent people build coherent organisations, where people, planet, purpose and performance move together.

Every leader, before anything else, is a human being. Neelkantha exists to serve that human being. We sit with executives, boards and institutions carrying the weight of complexity, and we help them find the steady ground beneath the noise. From there, clarity returns, decisions settle, and leadership becomes coherent again.
Most leaders already hold what they need. It has simply been buried under pressure, expectation and fear. Our work is to help them find it.

The Name
In an ancient story, gods and demons churned the cosmic ocean together, seeking the nectar of abundance. Before the nectar came, the ocean released a poison that threatened to destroy everything. No one would take it. One alone stepped forward and held it in his throat, neither swallowing it nor letting it spill, until the churning could continue. That throat turned blue. Neelkantha means the blue-throated one.
Leaders are asked to do the same: to hold what the system cannot yet absorb, steadily and with care, so the work can go on. That is the stillness we help leaders find.
